I’ve just completed Session 1 of the Integrity Playbook: Ethical Leadership Management Training with a group of managers. As always, the most valuable moments didn’t come from slides—they came from the questions.

One manager asked what seemed like a straightforward compliance question:
“If I receive a ticket to a sporting event that falls within the policy’s value limit, that’s okay…right?”
On paper, the policy might suggest yes.
In real life, compliance professionals know it’s not that simple.
Who is offering the ticket?
What relationship exists?
Is a business decision pending?
Would you be comfortable explaining it publicly?
This is where compliance shifts from rules to judgment.
When managers are only given policies—without conversation, context, or real examples—they’re left to interpret gray areas alone. That’s not a failure of intention; it’s a failure of preparation.
In ethics and compliance, the most honest answer is often:
It depends.
And that’s exactly why these conversations matter.
I’m grateful to this manager for raising the question. Creating space for dialogue doesn’t weaken compliance—it strengthens it. These are the moments where ethical leadership is learned, practiced, and reinforced.
If you want your managers to confidently navigate gray areas instead of guessing—or worse, staying silent—I’d love to talk about how the Integrity Playbook helps make that happen.
When was the last time your manager raised a question?
Did you give them the opportunity?! Let me teach you how.
